Pair of Large Chinese Thousand Butterfly Pattern Polychrome Vases
Pair of Large Chinese Thousand Butterfly Pattern Polychrome Vases
In an unusual polychrome palette, these substantial vases carry on a long tradition of the “thousand butterfly” pattern, found in earlier times in limited colorations: all orange glaze, all green or in the mid 19th century, polychrome with lots of black contrast. These vases represent the next evolution of the pattern in the late 19th century Late Qing Dynasty, (Guangxu Period 1875-1908.) Lilac, orange, green and blue with finely painted detail inside the wings along with the tangerine dragon handles distinguish this pair of vases. The pink, yellow and blue archaic patterns banding the neck and foot of each vase are typical of the period. Hand painted marks in underglaze red on the bottom. Excellent antique condition, very slight wear to the surfaces and with artisanal irregularities, as made.
