Mirabelle Antiques offers a carefully selected collection of French antique furniture dating primarily from the 18th and 19th centuries, including period and later examples in the Louis XV, Louis XVI, Régence, French Provincial and Neoclassical traditions.

Our French furniture is selected for quality, character and decorative appeal, with an emphasis on pieces that work beautifully in contemporary interiors as well as traditional settings. Inventory regularly includes antique French commodes and chests, console and side tables, desks, chairs, armchairs, settees, cabinets and other distinctive furniture.

18th and 19th Century French Furniture

French furniture of the 18th century encompasses an extraordinary range of forms, from the curved silhouettes and cabriole legs associated with Louis XV furniture to the straighter lines, symmetry and classical ornament associated with Louis XVI and Neoclassical design.

Provincial French furniture often interprets these fashionable forms in regional woods and with a less formal character. Walnut, fruitwood, oak, painted surfaces and traditional construction give many French Provincial pieces their distinctive warmth and individuality.

The 19th century continued and reinterpreted earlier French styles, producing high-quality furniture in the Louis XV, Louis XVI, Régence and Neoclassical traditions alongside changing tastes of the period.

These are original late 18th century copperplate engravings of gélinotes (grouse): including the “Large Canadian Grouse,” “Sengalese Grouse,” “White Grouse,”  “White Grouse in Summer Plumage,” “Male Canadian Grouse” and “Female Canadian Grouse.” Dating ca. the third quarter of the 18th century on laid paper, all have impression marks visible inside the matting. Hand colored in delicate detail, and enhanced by beautiful frames and matted alike with hand painted filage surrounds. The French artist/naturalist François-Nicolas Martinet (1731-?) was born in Paris and worked independently as well as with the Comte de Buffon on the encyclopedic work Histoire Naturelle which included 9 volumes documenting birds, an ornithological treasure trove. Good antique condition with light wear to the frames, minor signs of age/toning to the antique engravings.

From his work titled Traité des Armes, published in 1740, these fine original copperplate engravings illustrate various positions and techniques of the art of “l’escrime,” intended as a manual for the French army. They are wonderfully detailed in terms of facial expressions and clothing,  hand colored in gouache, with bold French text at the top of each. Plate marks are visible on all plates. The framing is of exceptional quality, gilt frames surround chocolate matting which is further embellished with layers of marbleized and gold filage. All in very good antique condition, very light  wear to the frames, normal minor signs of age, toning and artisanal variation to the prints themselves.

French Aubusson Floral Wall Tapestry in Coral, Rose and Sage Green

An elegant and vividly colored French wool tapestry dating to the second half of the 19th century, featuring an elegant Neoclassical floral composition combined with strapwork, drapery and other decorative elements. The rose coral background coloring was popular in the late 18th century, notably in the work of the Gobelins tapestry works of Paris, and it saw a revival through the second half of the 19th century, for both wall and upholstery tapestries. At just under 10' tall, this is a great accent piece for any wall or the end of a hallway. This format was most frequently used as a decorative hanging between a pair of windows. There is a pocket sewn into the top edge for a rod to run through- any slim curtain rod will work for hanging. Good antique condition, with artisanal irregularities, as made, and a few small spots of oxidation. Antique linen backing fabric has some staining that does not go through to the tapestry itself.
