A large deeply moulded wooden wall mirror with very attractive composition relief decoration in both low and high relief. The flat faced florets with their spriggy foliage set on the gilded basket have a fresh and unexpectedly informal aspect. The bold pearl beading and rounded acanthus and berry ornament at the edges of the frame is more formal and traditional. Composition was moulded from a mixture of plaster, resin and sawdust, and was commonly used since the late 18th century to produce detailed ornamental surfaces and mouldings such as those seen here. Mid to late 19th century. Very good antique condition with light wear, a few separations/signs of age to the composition ornament. Beveled mirror plate is later.
