William & Mary Marquetry Chest of Drawers

William & Mary Marquetry Chest of Drawers

$0.00

A fine late 17th century walnut two over three chest of drawers, each cross banded drawer front embellished with marquetry panels filled with marvelously detailed floral compositions, a type of fine wood work that was introduced to England with the accession of the Dutch couple, William and Mary of Orange, both of whom were grandchildren of Charles I of England. They acceded to the throne of England in 1688, bringing, along with their retinue, the fashions and artistic tastes of the Continent, which are in evidence here. Hardware is later, some bun feet possibly later. Provenance: private collection, prior to that, A. B. Closson, Cincinnati.
