Set of Six 18th Century Handcolored Aquatint Engravings of Famous Racehorses

A fine group of hand colored aquatint engravings depicting famous 18th century English racehorses, along with the details of their breeding, their race records and noble affiliated families. Pictured are stallions White Nose and  Babraham: two sons of the famous Godolphin Arabian, Old Partner sired by the Byerley Turk and Childers, sired by the Darley Arabian, thus representing the three foundation sires of the modern thoroughbred. Also pictured are Lamprey and Crab, of notable breeding and race records. These engravings are part of a series painted by Thomas Spencer (1700-1763) and engraved in the 1750’s by Richard Houston. All engravings are in exceptionally good condition, double matted in cream and tan and framed in slightly burled walnut colored natural wood frames.
