These are original late 18th century engravings: including “Toucan,” “Courly Rouge de Brésil,” “Geay Bleu du Canada” and “le Loriot Mâle.” Hand colored in delicate detail, and enhanced by beautiful frames and matted alike with hand painted filage surrounds. François Nicolas Martinet (1731-?) was born in Paris and worked independently as well as with the Comte de Buffon on the encyclopedic work Histoire Naturelle which included 9 volumes documenting birds, an ornithological treasure trove, published between 1770 and 1783.
