American 19th Century Classical Landscape in the Manner of Claude Lorrain

American 19th Century Classical Landscape in the Manner of Claude Lorrain

$0.00

An ambitious composition probably based upon an engraving after a 17th century painting by French artist Claude Lorrain. The details of the composition: the temple lined harbor and the staffage of the small figures in the foreground all point toward a 17th century antecedent. The evocation of Old Master European art (and by extension the classical world that informed Old Master art) was a statement of erudition by both artist and patron of such artworks. The canvas and style of this painting are typical of the New England painting of the second half of the 19th century, no visible signature.
