“Mercury,” Bronze Figure, Early 20th Century
Made by P. Mori and Son, New York, as noted by the original Art Deco era label on the bottom of the statue, the figure of Mercury is well modeled, with a nice dark bronze patina, the removable caduceus is parcel gilt.. The figure is an early 20th century copy of a ca. 1580 original sculpture by Giambologna, a virtuoso Flemish turned Italian artist who settled in Florence. The original was made to grace a garden fountain in Rome for Ferdinando de Medici, (but now found in the Bargello in Florence). Smaller versions, like this one, have been sought after trophies of the Grand Tour, since the 18th century. The term “Galvano Bronze” on the label refers to a technique P. Mori and Son used to bronze plate plaster sculpture. Details on the plinth are slightly stylized on this version, comporting with the Art Deco period of its making. Excellent condition.
