Pair of Antique Japanese Kutani Porcelain Vases Adapted into Lamps
A pair of very finely decorated Kutani vase lamps, each with detailed court scenes alternating with intricate vignettes of peonies, songbirds and phoenixes. The gilt footed bases allow the cords to be repositioned so that any side can be used as the front, including the dramatic black ground sections that divide the main scenes with orange and gilt floral motifs. Exquisite and delicately painted detail is found throughout: chrysanthemums, branches, gilt cloud patterns and lappets combine in an absolute visual feast. High quality brass fittings, new slubby linen textured drum shades. Very good antique condition, with artisanal irregularities, light craquelure to the glaze, antiqued gilding to the bases, as made. Ca. Late 19th / early 20th century.
