Large and Unusual Shell Shaped Antique Meissen Porcelain Bowl, 19th Century, Blue Onion Pattern
Large and Unusual Shell Shaped Antique Meissen Porcelain Bowl, 19th Century, Blue Onion Pattern
$350.00
A deep and finely articulated ribbed scallop shaped early 19th century serving bowl in the pattern known as Blue Onion, which originated at the Meissen factory in Saxony in 1740, a European version in cobalt and white of popular Chinese porcelain patterns. The painting on this dish omits the bulb shaped elements that gave the pattern its name, instead focusing on the large and very gracefully delineated flower elements. Marked with the crossed swords of Meissen and an empressed 'I' mark of the period 1814-1824. Good antique condition, moderate wear with some small rim flakes, roughness to edge, mostly to the lower part of the serrated edge of the shell.
