English Delftware Peacock and Spongeware Plate
An exceptionally fine example of its type, a sought after peacock decorated English Staffordshire plate executed with unusual delicacy and precision. Whereas the sponge decoration of similar plates is sometimes rather blobby, this example is tightly controlled and is further enhanced by the very elegant arcs of the branches and lines that form the peacock itself. The body of the plate is also especially fine, precisely formed with a scalloped rim. Ca. 1800. Exceptional antique condition, exhibiting light craquelure, and artisanal irregularities and small firing flaws, a couple of very small flakes to the underside of the rim. Provenance: collection inventory number hand painted on the back, deaccessioned from the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
