French Provincial Marquetry Slant Front Desk, late 18th Century

French Provincial Marquetry Slant Front Desk, late 18th Century
An elegant and diminutive slant front desk, combining restrained transitional Louis XV slendar curved legs and apron with a touch of Louis XVI formality. The light fruitwood is enhanced with contrasting dark inlays featuring an especially chic interlocking knot motif recalling Greek key ornamentation. A mix of smartly book matched grain patterns and burled and figured wood panels add further visual interest. The front contains two small drawers over a single long drawer. The interior is fitted with four drawers and a shelf. A central compartment does not open. Green leather writing surface. In restored antique condition, with scattered restorations to the marquetry and some areas with woodworm- overall a very attractive antique French provincial look, with imperfections and patina imparting great character to the piece. Good French polished surface.
