Louis XV Style Table with Chinese Lacquered Tray Top
Louis XV Style Table with Chinese Lacquered Tray Top
A graceful French black painted and parcel gilt occasional table on cabriole legs ending in pied de biche feet dating probably to the second quarter of the 19th century. This table was made to fit the slightly earlier, ca. 1820, Chinese lacquer tray which forms the top. Delicate gilt detail decorates the black lacquer ground of the tray which features a floral and rockery composition with birds executed in gilding and dark cinnabar red. A very closely related table of the same size and with the top being a near pair to this one was sold from the estate of Mario Buatta, with prior provenance of Christie’s, NY, 1985. Good antique condition: heavy but stable craquelure typical of lacquer of this age. Worming, signs of age to the wood, paint and gilding.
