Large Dark Grey Jasperware Cheese Dome, Wedgwood
Large Dark Grey Jasperware Cheese Dome, Wedgwood
Of an interesting and unusual deep blue-gray clay tone with applied decoration of cream colored Greek key encircling the perimeters. Six Neoclassical oval medallions centered on figural motifs ornament the dome. The handle is a fabulous rope knot on top. This two part cheese platter and dome bears a “7” along with an impressed “v” mark on both the inside lid and on the bottom and a hand engraved “889” mark inside the lid. Unmarked Wedgwood ceramic bodies were produced in the late 18th/early 19th century before the actual “Wedgwood” impressed mark was routinely used on all of the firm’s products, likely indicating an early date for this piece.Very good antique condition, slight irregularities, as made, to the body and color also point to an early date- light patina.
