French Napoleon III Crested Borderglass Gilt Mirror, 19th Century

An unusual French gilt borderglass mirror, borrowing its sloped shouldered form from earlier Louis Philippe period mirror designs. The flat shaped reserves in between the egg and dart moulding and the pearl border are the most unusual feature, and are embellished with motifs incised in the gesso prior to gilding. The bold crest is composed of C-scrolls, foliage and flowers, with the foliage patinated rather than gilded, for contrast. Original wood board back. Late 19th century.
