Set of Nine Finely Framed 18th Century German Botanicals- Hyacinths from the Hortus Nitidissimis

$0.00

Eight large and very fine hand colored copperplate engravings from the encyclopedic book Hortus Nitidissimis by Christophorus Jacobus Trew. This group represents a significant collection of images from this Nuremberg publication, featuring the collaborative artwork of botanists Georg Ehret (1708-1770), Nikolaus Eisenberger (1707-1771), naturalist, artist and art dealer Adam Ludwig Wirsing (1733-1797) plus one image by Johann Michael Seligmann (1720-1762). Engraved plate dates range from 1764-1782; the Seligmann is from the 1750’s. Eight are framed alike, with complex layers of matting with filage and marbleized overlays. The ninth is slightly smaller, uses the same frame, but slightly different matting. Hand coloring is done in gouache, giving the images an unusually painterly and substantial effect.
