Set of Four Original 18th Century Handcolored Sea Shell Engravings

Set of Four Original 18th Century Handcolored Sea Shell Engravings

$0.00

A fine set of large colored copper plate engravings, matted and well framed alike, from “The Encyclopedia or Modern Universal Dictionary of Arts and Sciences,” by William Henry Hall, published by Alexander Hogg in London around 1789. Illustrated editions of encyclopedias were all the rage in 18th century Europe as cultivated people sought both knowledge and entertainment in the Age of Enlightenment, when people thirsted especially after scientific and natural history related information. Plates include a variety of sea urchins, murex, nautilus, volutes, etc. with accompanying labels in a mix of English, French and Italian.
