Pair of Finely Framed and Large 18th Century German Botanical Engravings- Hyacinths from the Hortus Nitidissimis
Two very fine hand colored copperplate engravings on laid paper from the encyclopedic book Hortus Nitidissimis by Christophorus Jacobus Trew in magnificently matted frames. One image by naturalist, artist and art dealer Adam Ludwig Wirsing (1733-1797), plus one image by Johann Michael Seligmann (1720-1762): the Seligmann is from the 1750’s. The Wirsing Plate XVII is dated 1774. Hand coloring is done in gouache, giving the images an unusually painterly and substantial effect. Very good condition, paper with light toning, frames with very light wear, some intentional antiquing of the gilding. Matting is very fine and complex, with multiple layers, applied surrounds of marbleized paper and hand drawn filage: framing done by D. Matt Inc. of NYC.
