Pair of Citrus Engravings, Restrikes of Original Early 18th Century Volkamer Plates

$0.00

A handsome hand colored pair of copperplate engravings of citrus: specifically two varieties of orange, by the well to do German botanist Johann Christoph Volkamer of Nuremberg. His botanical studies are preserved in the lavishly illustrated "Nurenbergische Hesperides” which he published in two volumes between 1708 and 1714. Oranges and citrus in general were quite exotic in Northern Europe in this period, and botanical enthusiasts were fervent collectors and cataloguers of all manner of newly discovered specimens. These restrikes, on wove paper, of two original copper plates date to the 19th century, with later watercolor hand coloring.
