Russian Kholmogory Carved Box
$0.00
A late 18th/early 19th century walrus bone veneered box, resembling ivory, from Kholmogory, a town in the north west Russian province of Arkhangelsk, famous from the 17th through the 19th century for its high quality walrus and seal bone carving. Engraved polychrome decoration on flat panels and intricate carved fretwork panels make up the ensemble of cream colored veneer backed with patinated copper and mica “glass" over wood. Velvet lines the interior, and the top has possibly original Chinese silk and gold wrapped thread embroidery augmented with later trim.
