A late 18th century walrus ivory veneered box, from Kholmogory, a town in the north west Russian province of Arkhangelsk, famous from the 17th through the 19th century for it's high quality walrus and seal bone carving. Engraved polychrome decoration on flat panels and intricate carved fretwork panels and scrolled rinceaux make up the ensemble of ivory veneer on wood. Paper lining on the interior. Feet have been replaced.
