Palissy Ware Majolica Lobster Charger Plate
Palissy Ware Majolica Lobster Charger Plate
A fun three dimensional tableau in glazed ceramic, featuring a lobster and shellfish, rendered in vivid colors: red and emerald greens, with seafloor details in pebbly naturalistic colors and forms. This type of decorative ceramic art is known as Palissyware, after the 16th French century artist Bernard Palissy, who developed the original dense and detailed compositions of fish, sea creatures, snakes etc; along with plant forms packed tightly together, each element executed a naturalistic style. Palissy’s distinctive work found a receptive audience, and Royal patronage and copies by other ceramicists both in France and elsewhere in Europe followed. This example is Portuguese, 20th century, with indecipherable impressed maker’s marks on the underside. Can be displayed as a table top piece of hung: holes made for hanging wire are found in the foot rim. Very good condition.
