An exquisite object, a late 19th century English burl walnut lap desk writing box encrusted with jewel-like engraved gilt brass mounts. The top lifts open to reveal a writing slope with a marbleized surface and finely executed compartments with decorative mounts, and a larger storage compartment. Made by George Betjemann and Sons, a London family business, makers and purveyors of luxury goods made from precious materials from 1859-1893, the locking mechanism stamped with the name.
