Assembled Set of Nine French Majolica Plates of Two Patterns
Assembled Set of Nine French Majolica Plates of Two Patterns
An assembled set of various sizes and makers-
a group of four green glazed dessert plates with maker’s mark: Faiencerie de Gien, the pattern a composition of detailed leaves, ferns and blossoms, with smaller leaves superimposed in low relief. From the estate of mid-century fashion photographer and antiques dealer Roger Prigent, longtime proprietor of Malmaison Antiques, NYC. Along with an unusual combined set of petal edge French faience light emerald green French plates and a larger and deeper green dish from a different ceramics manufactory. All have an unusual petal form rim encircling decoration of grape leaves and vines in the center. The patterns are nearly exact copies, yet with subtle differences of texture and more noticeably color.
All fern plates are late 19th century, good antique condition, light wear from age and use. Petal plates are in good condition, with light wear, marked with an impressed “3” on the back, the larger dish is marked “Vandrevange” (from the northeast near the German border) and has a repair at the rim, and a chip to the inner foot (not visible from the outside).
