A portrait of an American girl, Miss Densmore, painted by English painter John Alfred Giles, signed and dated 1850. The canvas bears a stencil of the art materials supplier Holt of 80 Gosford Rd. in Islington, a borough of London, who took over the business of an earlier art supplier at the same address around the date of this painting. The subject of the painting is the daughter of Helen Cynthia Densmore, whose portrait the artist also painted in 1857. Good antique condition with craquelure throughout, very minor wear at the frame edge. In a late 20th century frame. Light wear to the frame. The portrait was brought back to the U.S. and descended in a New England family to the present owner, who identified the subject of the painting.
