A fine example of the equestrian art of Johann Elias Ridinger, (1698-1767), one of the foremost German artists and engravers of his time, specializing in animals, particularly horses, hounds and hunting scenes. He spent three years at the Riding School of Regensburg, an experience which had a profound influence on his work. His illustrations of equitation, such as these dressage prints, are among his best known engravings. Sometime around 1723, Ridinger founded his own art publishing house in Augsburg and began selling prints that he himself designed and engraved. These included series on hunting, breeds of horses, riding manuals, wild animals and hunting dogs. His sons, Martin Elias Ridinger  and Johann Jakob Ridinger, continued to run the publishing house, and the most popular of their father's work was re-issued in the late 18th century and into the early 19th century. On wove paper, with plate impression mark visible, this print has great precision and clarity, and dates to the later 18th or early 19th century. High quality hand coloring. Light even foxing to the engraving, attractive wide matting and frame with light wear, some dings.
