Pair of Rare Moses Harris Hand Colored Butterfly Engravings

Pair of Rare Moses Harris Hand Colored Butterfly Engravings

$1,600.00

Handsomely framed with gilt wood frames and marbleized filets, these dramatic original copperplate engraved and watercolored compositions come from “The Aurelian or Natural History of English Insects,” first published in 1766 and again in 1775, 1794 and 1840. Moses Harris (1730- 1787) delved into the subject of etymology and he executed the engraving of the illustrations himself, with notable efforts at accuracy in the anatomy and coloring of butterflies. In addition to making valued contributions to the pursuit of 18th century Natural History, Harris also published a work on color theory. Light toning to the paper, impression marks visible.
