“Into the Stables,” Oil on Canvas of Horses and a Stable Lad, 19th Century
$1,900.00
An oil painting showing two powerful horses being brought into the stables. Both horses are impressively painted, the volumes of their muscles well rendered as is the dappling of their gleaming coats. The grey one shies at the bollard, wide eyed with fright. Signed, W. S. 1861 above the bollard. Set in a good 20th century gilt frame. The canvas bears a stamp of Goupil et Cie., with their New York address. The French based Goupil company set up at 289 Broadway in 1848 and was a dealer of art. This canvas alludes to their sale of art supplies also, making it likely that the raw canvas was sold by Goupil New York and the the painting was also done in New York. Good antique condition, stable craquelure throughout.
