French or German, a handsome wide framed Continental gilded ripple carved mirror with its original Mercury glass “starry sky” mirror plate. Can be used either as a pier mirror or horizontally as an over mantel mirror. Gilding is very bright with attractive patination, the inner moulding is a red clay tinted gesso over a carved basket weave banding motif with flecks of gilding and an inner rope twist molding. Heavy patina and surface wear in places, some restorations- good antique condition over all with signs of age and use. Retains original backboards. Mid-19th century.
