$1,100.00

A set of eight original lithograph fish engravings, all signed J. W. Hill. Hill (1812-1879) was a British born artist who immigrated to the US as a child in 1819. Hill’s father had worked as an engraver in London and eventually took his son on as apprentice. The natural history subject matter was very much in vogue in the 18th and 19th centuries, and the flora and fauna of his new home in New York was the object of his attention for these illustrations which come from James de Kay’s encyclopedic “Zoology of New York State” published between 1842 and 1844. J. W. Hill’s paintings and engravings are found in the collections of the  Brooklyn Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Fogg Museum, National Gallery of Art and others. Good overall antique condition, with signs of age, some toning to all, light unobtrusive wear to 20th century frames.
