French Grey Painted Carved Oak Pier Mirror / Over Mantel Mirror

French Grey Painted Carved Oak Pier Mirror / Over Mantel Mirror
A finely carved 18th century French mirror with a weathered pale grey painted finish, the details are beautifully articulated: egg and dart moulding surrounds the mirror plate followed by an interlace over a distinctive convex moulding, then finishing above the cavetto with an acanthus leaf detail. Ca. 18th century, carved in the Régence manner, possibly of the period. Likely was part of a boiserie ensemble. Mirror plate is later, probably early 20th century with a few age spots. Original paneled wooden back is very weathered, interestingly pasted over with 19th century French newspaper pages and newsprint illustrations of the first (Transvaal) Boer War which was fought between Britain and the Boers of South Africa in 1880-81.
