A large mid 19th century grisaille seascape in a rare technique called sandpaper “painting,” basically a technique of charcoal drawing with marble dust, with the surface of the paper covered with fine grit like sandpaper. In this example, a harbor scene from antiquity shows distinctive boats docked amid grand classical architectural structures, against a dramatic sunset. Some wear, creasing to the paper, wear to the gilded frame.
