This image was part of an illustrated Natural History compendium of known 19th century mammals illustrated by J. C. Werner and published in volumes between 1818 and 1842. This sheet is the sporty South American red coati, a tropical cousin of the raccoon. Lightly hand colored, fur rendered in detail, signed “Werner del.” and Lithog. de C. de Last” Well matted in a simple silver gilt frame, toning and foxing to the paper.
