“A Prized Bay Stallion” English Equestrian Oil on Canvas by John Barwick
“A Prized Bay Stallion” English Equestrian Oil on Canvas by John Barwick
An oil portrait of a fine bay horse elegantly turned out in fancy tack, with brass embellishments on the bridle and a black fleece covering the saddle of a type typically seen on the English Royal Horse Guards’ tack. Roman numerals and an initial “H” hint at the unknown owner of this horse. The castle tower in the background gives further context to the importance of the subject to the person who commissioned the portrait. Signed and dated by the English artist: “J. (John) Barwick, 185?”- last date number is covered by the frame edge. Old art gallery label is affixed to the frame from Thomas Morrod, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Good antique condition, with typical signs of age, surface patina. The frame has been regilded with intentional distress.
