French Transitional Marquetry Commode With Dark Grey Brèche Sainte-Anne Marble Top
A finely inlaid mixed woods marquetry commode with a shaped front and three drawers. A sunburst marquetry pattern in light wood fills the center panel, flanked by subtle striped marquetry accomplished with two-tone herringbone inlay patterns within a framework of darker mahogany, setting up a stylish interplay of color and pattern. The top drawer features a stylish Italianate trompe l’oeil “fluted” pattern that continues around the sides. Brass sand cast ring pulls are complemented with decorative escutcheon plates at the center of each drawer. A conforming dark grey figured Brèche Sainte-Anne marble top ha s molded edge. Ca. 1890’s. Good antique condition with some signs of age and use, typical slight age separations to the wood, small losses, restorations to the bottom of the feet, (previously with sabots). Drawers function well and smoothly, one lock mechanism missing. A few minor frits to the edge of the marble, rough chisel marks to the back side, as made.
