A charming pair of yellow ware pottery cats, a very unusual subject for such figures, which are additionally rare for being a pair, dating to the mid 19th century. They are finished with the characteristic burnt caramel colored manganese glaze which originated at the Rockingham pottery in Yorkshire, England,. Rockingham glaze was popularly used at various American potteries from around 1840 through the end of the 19th century, where English potters set up workshops, the best known of which was in East Liverpool, Ohio.
