Large French Borderglass Pier Mirror with Rococo Winged Crest, from Nantes

$0.00

A large and impressive gilded pier mirror, the crest with a winged cartouche set among exuberant Rococo scrolling forms at the center. Pearl borders, a variation on egg and dart moldings and elongated cartouche corners complete the surround. The frame is a combination of gilded wood and moulded plaster, typical of the ca. 1880-1910 period. The border glass is canted in a cushion frame format. Good antique condition, wear to the gilding and edges from age and use, showing patina, distress, some red clay bole, separations, restorations, unevenness to the flat moulding where the surface has seen restoration. Original back boards stamped with the name of the maker: Mons. Texier, located in Nantes. Original “starry” mercury glass mirrored borders, minor desilvering central mirror plate possibly a replacement as it is not mercury glass.
