Fine American Federal Mahogany Chest of Drawers, Massachusetts, ca. 1810
Fine American Federal Mahogany Chest of Drawers, Massachusetts, ca. 1810
A very fine example of a Boston area Sheraton mahogany chest of drawers, with turret corners and reeded stiles on tall legs, giving the piece a sporty and well proportioned look. In gorgeous condition, the top is a single board of figured mahogany with the drawer fronts, likewise, all with lively and fine figured timber. Drawer hardware is very bold and attractive, beaded solid cast brass. A fading chalk inscription on the back reads “Joseph Lund to Elizabeth Lund 1818, This is the bureau that was brought up the canal”- a paper label transcribes this information and was long ago typed and pasted to the back, providing early provenance. Exceptional condition overall, good finish, minor signs of age and use, a few dark marks to the top. Very handsome hardware is later.
