Pair of Large Staffordshire Heads of State Military Figures on Horseback, 19th c.

$795.00

A pair of important mustachioed historical figures mounted on fine white horses, depicting two soldierly European heads of state: the King of Prussia and Patrick MacMahon, a French general of Franco-Irish descent who later served as President of France from 1875-1879. The King of Prussia was an erstwhile rival in Europe, whose army captured Napoleon III in 1870 and invaded France, ending the last era of French monarchy. The Prussian invasion ushered in the brief era of the Paris Commune and ultimately led to the establishment of the French Republic with MacMahon at its head. Ca. 1870. Very good antique condition, normal craquelure and irregularities as made, light wear to the surface glaze.
