A fine and large Nanking pattern tureen, a classic blue and white Chinese export porcelain pattern. The Nanking pattern is a wonderfully detailed version of the teahouse studded estuary landscape found in the more common and simpler Canton pattern. The Nanking pattern always contains a figure on a bridge among other varying landscape elements. This tureen has a particularly notable knob, very large and showy with a petal medallion at its base. The handles are also unusually fine with blackberry leaves and fruits worked into the double twists that form the projecting side handles. Ca. 1820. Very good antique condition, typical large scale craquelure to the glazes, normal artisanal and firing irregularities.
