Antique Staffordshire Collector’s Alphabet Plates- a Trio

Antique Staffordshire Collector’s Alphabet Plates- a Trio

$295.00

One marked A. Shaw & Son, Mersey Pottery Burslem, the other two unmarked, these are among the charming output of the Staffordshire Potteries in the later part of the 19th century. This was an era when interest in celebrating childhood pursuits and an idealized vision of childhood in general reached a cultural peak. These plates delineate the alphabet along with pretty vignettes of birds and bits of nature, among them a heron chasing after leaping frogs. Good antique condition, with signs of use, light wear, suitable for use or display. Glaze irregularities, as made. One (the largest) with a shallow rim repair visible only on the back.
