“Rough Seas off the Yorkshire Coast,” 1865, by Ralph Reuben Stubbs
A dramatic seascape by the talented 19th century English artist Ralph Reuben Stubbs (1825-1879), known for his landscape paintings depicting the natural and wild beauty of his native Yorkshire coast as well as local inland scenes, conveyed in expressive impressionistic brushwork. He was a self-taught artist who achieved success in his lifetime, his work even being accepted for exhibition at the Royal Academy, the ultimate mark of recognition for serious artists since the late 18th century. A charming synopsis of his life was written and published upon his death in 1879, and published in the Daily Gazette of Middlesbrough, Yorks., a copy of which I am happy to share. The painting is signed and dated 1865. In a 20th century Belgian made gilt wood frame.
