Pair of Chinese Export Pith Paper Watercolor Paintings of Boats, Finely Framed
A beautiful pair of watercolor paintings of Chinese boats, one a grand sailing ship known as a junk with decorative trappings and oars for 36 rowers, the other painting depicting two rather more down-to-earth canopied fishing vessels. Both are marvels in precision and attention to minute detail and both are in excellent condition, colors remarkably bright and with only minimal and very faint discoloration to the cream paper. Attractively matted alike in cream silk with a deep gilded cut-away and framed in matching attractively distressed antique gilded and sgraffito decorated frames. First half of the 19th century, in later frames. In excellent condition, colors remarkably bright and with only minimal and very faint discoloration to the cream paper. Frames with intentionally distressed finishes.
