Pair of 18th Century English Landmark Architectural Aquatint Views Published by John Boydell: “Somerset Place” (1795) and “Strawberry Hill” (1793)
A beautifully hand colored pair of views drawn by member of the Royal Academy Joseph Farington, (1747-1821), who produced a series of 76 views documenting the length of the Thames River, which was published by Boydell between 1793 and 1796. These two views depict a fascinating period view of watermen’s activities on the Thames in the foreground to the monumental Somerset House, which survives to this day, and which was in the late 18th century, home to the Royal Academy. The other view is the bucolic Neo-Gothic home of Horace Walpole, Earl of Orford (1717-1797), influential antiquarian and politician. The Thames River can be glimpsed at the right hand side of the grounds. Lovely vintage hand painted matting with filage, gilt frames. Toning to the paper, attractive distress to the frames.
