“Crossing the Ford,” 19th Century Oil on Canvas Landscape Painting with Horses
$4,500.00
A fine oil on canvas genre scene depicting a group of women and a child, two astride beautifully painted horses, crossing a shallow body of water, returning from market. They are departing for home from a town, which can be glimpsed through an allée of trees at the distant left. Second half of the 19th century. Unsigned. This is a very fine copy of Augustus Wall Callcott’s original painting (now in the Tate Museum, London), painted ca. 1834, which draws on scenery from his travels in the Netherlands.
