An early 18th century copperplate engraving from Sir Robert Atkyns’ work, the “Ancient and Present State of Glocestershire.” Atkyns (1647-1711) was a gentleman, member of Parliament and the commissioner of this ambitious work depicting bird’s eye views of significant English buildings and estates in his home county of Gloucestershire. The artist actually responsible for the execution of the 65 illustrations for Atkyns’ book, which was published in 1712, is Johannes Kip (1652-1722) a genius Dutch artist, who drew and engraved this and similar work for other patrons.
