A dowry chest or cassone, from the second half of the 18th century, the front of somewhat architectural form, with a footed plinth and projecting “pilasters” separating the marquetry panels. Original strap hinges. Cassoni were given by the bride’s family to the bride, filled with gifts, particularly linens, and were used like blanket chests. The height of this one is such that it could be used as a bench.
