Bisque Porcelain Goat and Rider by Vion et Baury

Bisque Porcelain Goat and Rider by Vion et Baury

A very finely modeled French bisque porcelain figural group, incorporating a mix of glazed and natural bisque porcelain, the figures and costume inspired by the whimsy, beauty and absurdity frequently found in earlier 18th century porcelain compositions. Dating to the late 19th century, this is an excellent example of the work produced by modeler Charles Baury who worked in Paris for the firm of Jean Giles (founded in 1837) until Baury took over the manufactory in 1868 and a few years later moved it to Choisey-le-roi. A periwinkle embossed maker’s seal cipher “VB” for Vion et Baury is found on the underside.
